Writing has been a throughline in my career that has connected my work across industries. Whether advertising or plays and poems, professional or creative, writing has always been grounding. Words are so central to building bonds and community, connecting with audiences in ads or art, on the stage or the street. I write to bring people together, because at the end of the day, Tory Eletto said it best: “What is not communicated, is felt. What is felt is interpreted. What is interpreted is often inaccurate.”
Cries From Quarantine
Let’s be honest, 2020 took us all by surprise—we all know what that means. While coping with lockdown I wrote and published Cries From Quarantine, a tender, insightful book of poetry about love of all kinds. From unconditional familial love to unconventional romantic love, the verses curated for this collection are intended to inspire a universal truth: that self-love is at the heart of all love. Each poem is written with gratitude for the stillness brought on by the pandemic. The book was accompanied by a lofi/hip-hop spoken word album.
Playwriting
My debut play, Soul in Suburbia is an intimate look through the lens of a Black family in suburbia in the 80s. The piece is framed around a Black woman forced to go to anger management therapy in order to keep her job. The lasting message is that if Black people weren’t afraid to deal with our historical trauma and oppression, we could be a healthier community across the board.
Ultimately, La Havana Madrid playwright Sandra Delgado directed the piece and Soul in Suburbia made a buzz at Collaboraction’s Encounter Festival. What originated as a short play, remounted as a full-length production incorporating more actors, spoken word and dance.
Immediately following Soul in Suburbia, I signed on as co-divisor of A Blue Island in the Red Sea, written and directed by Anthony Moseley. This play closely examined the harsh reality of systemic racism in Chicago. A Blue Island in the Red Sea is a world-premiere devised work presented in a meta-theatrical live experience intended to open eyes and further the conversation about racism and racial healing in Chicago.
